Season off to promising start for juniors!

Emma Cooling6 May - 17:12

Packed fixtures schedule begins

Our first 2025 junior fixtures have taken place in the golden glow of evening sunshine, a mixed bag in terms of results but all round delight to be back in the game!
Our u11s came up against Exmouth on Wednesday. Coach Andrew Nelligan said “The boys lost to Exmouth: 140/6 & 109/4 but they did brilliantly against a very strong team who I’m told have 4 Devon players. We’ve benefited from several boys joining from Woodbury but those who played for the u10s have all shown improvement. I’m hopeful for a successful season.”
On May 1st Budleigh U17s enjoyed a friendly T20 match away at Upottery
Coach Jon James said: “It was great to get to the rarely visited beautiful setting of Upottery and see the way that their ground is developing with a second pitch and a 3rd team coming on strong. Their side had a mixed team consisting of u13s to u17s.
Budleigh won the toss and chose to bat sending in opener Otto, who it turned out had scattered his new spikes all over the pitch during the first few overs. Once collected back together he “anchored” the innings with a very mature 50. Great contributions throughout the team included Oscar and debuting Arthur both scoring speedy 25s. Budleigh ended up with a solid 162 all out setting a tough total for Upottery to chase.
Budleigh’s opening bowlers got off to a tight start conceding just 14 in the first 4 overs and Henry picking up a wicket with an amazing stretching catch by Max along the way.
“Budleigh continued to put the pressure on Upottery with their first change bowler Oscar picking up an outstanding 4 wickets for just 13 runs in his 4 overs ably assisted by Marcus who woke up to the new season after his golden duck providing a stumping and a runout. Elliot flawlessly finished the game off with a 3 wicket over leaving Upottery all out for just 74.
“Overall Budleigh put in a fantastic team effort with everyone making a difference and assisting the team to a comfortable victory, setting us up for a promising season ahead”
Team manager Chris Campbell was equally proud of our U14s who started the season brightly with a win in a friendly against Ottery on Wednesday, followed by a victory against Seaton in their first league match on Sunday.
He said “On a glorious mid-week evening at Ottery, the team continued where they had left off last season, treating spectators to a nerve-shredding finish. Ottery batted well, only losing two wickets for a total of 128. Budleigh also batted well, with Theo J and Ted supporting Shem, who made a brilliant 40, frequently finding the boundary. An unorthodox match (nine players, 21 overs) was brought to a conclusion by Rudi and Theo C, who hit consecutive boundaries in the final over to secure the win.
“On Sunday at home, the rust from midweek was brushed off and the whole team produced a strong performance against Seaton. Budleigh batted first, with the top order acquitting themselves well. Three batters retired not out (Theo J 41, Jonah 43, Bobby 40). Jonah was hitting the ball so hard, he split his bat in two! Budleigh's total of 172 for 6 was always going to be a tough target to reach and Seaton's accomplished top order started brightly. Budleigh's opening bowlers, however, kept the run rate down and wickets followed soon after. Great spells from Reuben and Billy, with a wicket apiece, helped open things up, with Bobby (2) and Finley (1) also striking to ensure a first home win. This was a great all-round team performance with some strong individual contributions.”
