Calling all past and present players, members, supporters and friends of Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club!
Did you know that Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, had a surprising connection to our cricket club? Or that women were playing cricket in Budleigh as far back as the 1880s? And what about the Olympic gold medallists, Wimbledon champions and even royalty whose stories are linked to the club?
These are just some of the remarkable discoveries revealed in 168 Not Out, by club historian Kevin Curran in his fascinating new book celebrating 168 years of Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club.
On the evenings of Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th November, Kevin will be giving special talks at the club, sharing some of the extraordinary stories, photographs and characters he has uncovered during more than 20 years of painstaking research.
When Kevin became Club Secretary in 2002, he discovered that virtually no club records survived from before 1946. Determined to uncover the missing history, he began searching Victorian newspapers, archives, old photographs and family records.
The result is an extraordinary book containing over 800 photographs and countless stories that bring generations of Budleigh cricket back to life – if you’ve played for the club then you’ll be in the book!
From the Victorian landowners who helped establish the club to the 17 players who lost their lives serving their country, Kevin's research reveals that the history of our cricket club is also the history of Budleigh itself.
There will undoubtedly be familiar faces, forgotten names and plenty of memories to share.
But these evenings are about more than cricket history!
They're an opportunity to catch up with old teammates, reminisce about matches and memorable characters, and enjoy a drink together.
The bar will be open, so come along, bring a friend and enjoy a sociable evening celebrating our club's remarkable heritage.
168 Not Out is a limited-edition book priced at £35, with proceeds supporting the club's future. For details on how to pre-order a copy email Kandj.curran@sky.com
