BSCC were proud to welcome Devon Women to The Holt on Sunday and even prouder to see them emerge victorious in their first 2025 season match!
Devon won by 4 wickets in the match against Berkshire in the Metro Bank One Day Cup and as well as being the first match at their new home ground, Sunday also marked the beginning of a new era for women's cricket, with Devon being placed in Division 1 of League Three under the new tier system.
With BSCC girls providing a welcome tunnel for the Devon Women players the Easter Sunday match was an occasion to celebrate women in Cricket and to inspire our younger players.
Sunday was also the first time the two sides have faced each other in six years, with only captain Steph Hutchins remaining from the side that last faced Berkshire.
Having elected to field, Devon's bowlers dominated early as Katie Donovan produced a devastating spell, ripping through Berkshire's top order with a sensational 5-28. The visitors slumped to 19-4 before Freya Johnson (28) and Sarah Pearson (23*) offered resistance. However, disciplined bowling from Ella Gill (2-21) and Eva Lewis (1-11) ensured Berkshire were dismissed for 147 in 37 overs. In reply, Devon's chase stuttered early as Freya Johnson (2-26) quickly removed openers Jemima Vereker and Elle Golsworthy. But Ellie Bishop anchored the innings with an unbeaten 63, combining patience and composure in a match-winning knock. A crucial 55-run stand with Regina Lilii (28) steadied the ship before a late contribution from Ella Gill (8*) saw Devon home at 151-6 in 40 overs.
Steph, who had high praise for the “brilliant” facilities at The Holt said of Sunday’s win “we set the ball running , took early wickets, kept consistency and stuck to our plans”
