Crowds gathered at The Holt on Saturday to watch the tense conclusion of a fantastic season of community league cricket for Budleigh!
This year’s finals day was the biggest and best yet – thanks to the addition of two more teams to the league and a busy programme of music and family fun with The Kings Arms claiming the BCL shield!
The weather put paid to Sunday’s plate finals (now taking place Sunday 14th see info at foot) and to bouncy castle plans for the Saturday but by the afternoon the sun was shining on a packed Holt as Kings faced Eastbudleigh FC for the final showdown.
With a Hospiscare giant tombola and 50/50 game with a hefty cash prize, a BBQ, face painting, three bars, live music and a cricket activity area for the little ones the day offered something for everyone.
Community League co-ordinator Barry Real said: ““What a great finals day topping off a competitive BCL season with two new teams and a host of new players from Budleigh and beyond. Finals day was played in typically good spirit with lots of laughs and some good cricket. Same again this Sunday for the plate finals!”
BSCC Director Bill Roper said: ““ It’s great to see the BCL go from strength to strength attracting more cricketers and more teams than ever before! Anyone that wants to come and get involved should get in touch to find a team - or even start a new one! “
Much-missed clubman Steve Richardson was remembered in the poignant presentation of a trophy in his memory – a new tradition for Finals Day.
BSCC senior cricket co-ordinator and finals day player Nick Bolt said: “It has been a fantastic season, with 11 teams competing in the community league and many new and returning players getting involved in local cricket. We hope this momentum will see even more players take part in Saturday league cricket going forward.
The Finals Festival was a fitting conclusion to the season, with a wonderful atmosphere and the community coming together to honour a true club legend in Steve.
Thank you to the Richardsons and to Norm for presenting the inaugural Steve Richardson Memorial Trophy, which was awarded to John Pring for his excellent performance in guiding the Kings to victory.”
The plate final matches will be held at 10am, 1pm and 4pm on Sunday, with breakfast being served 9am – 11am and a BBQ from 12 noon. Come and join us for some friendly competition between local pub and community teams!!!
